Volubilis is an ancient Roman city located in present-day Morocco, near the city of Meknes. It was founded in the 3rd century BCE and was later annexed by the Roman Empire in 44 CE. The city reached its peak during the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE. Serving as the capital of the Roman province of Mauretania Tingitana.

The ruins of Volubilis showcase an impressive array of well-preserved Roman architecture. Including grand public buildings, intricate mosaics. And imposing columns. Some of the notable structures within the archaeological site include the Capitol, Basilica, Triumphal Arch, and House of Orpheus.

Volubilis was a thriving city with a prosperous economy based on agriculture. Particularly the cultivation of wheat and olive oil production. Its strategic location along trade routes facilitated the exchange of goods and ideas between the Roman Empire and indigenous North African cultures.

In the morning at 8:00 get ready for a day filled with exploration and discovery.
Our Excursion takes us to Volubilis. A historic North African city with Roman ruins that offer a glimpse into the region’s rich past.
En route, we will pass through Meknes, once the capital of Morocco under the reign of Moulay Smail (1672-1727) and steeped in Berber history.
As we continue our excursion, Volubilis attracts us with its imposing presence at the foot of Jebel Zerhoun. This ancient city, built by the Romans, bears witness to urban development and Romanization on the borders of the Roman Empire.
Spanning an impressive 42 hectares, Volubilis is a remarkable example of the interface between Roman and indigenous cultures.
Its well-preserved ruins, intact for almost a millennium, exude authenticity and offer a wealth of epigraphic evidence, making it one of the richest sites of its time in North Africa.
After immersing ourselves in the wonders of Volubilis, we will then return to Fes. We’ll drop you off near your accommodation, allowing you to reflect on the day’s discoveries and relax amid the charm of this historic city.
