Take on the challenge of climbing the highest peak in North Africa — Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) — in just 2 or 3 days!
This adventure starts and ends in the vibrant city of Marrakech, with transportation provided to and from Imlil.
You’ll trek with a qualified local English-speaking mountain guide, a local cook, and mules to carry your luggage.
This is a trek, not a technical climb, and anyone in good physical condition can reach the summit.
Don’t forget your camera — the panoramic view from the top is absolutely breathtaking.
From November to April, crampons and an ice axe are required for safety, as snow often covers the upper slopes.
This route is ideal for enthusiastic trekkers, as the ascent involves a steady climb through rocky paths and snowy slopes, without technical difficulty.

Marrakech – Imlil – Toubkal Refuge (3206m) via Aremd & Mizane Valley
Leaving the bustling city behind, we drive south toward the rugged peaks and deep valleys of the Toubkal Massif.
Crossing the Haouz Plain, we pass through Asni, a small market town at the foot of the Atlas Mountains.
Below us, the Rhirhaia Valley stretches out, dotted with small Berber villages clinging to the steep hillsides.
We reach Imlil, where we meet our mountain guide and begin the trek along the Mizane Valley.
Our route leads first to Aremd, the largest village in the valley, perched on a moraine overlooking terraced fields.
Here you’ll see traditional Berber life — stone houses, terraced crops of corn and potatoes, and livestock grazing on the slopes.
Continuing eastward, we cross a floodplain and follow mule tracks along steep cliffs to reach Sidi Chamarouch, a small village and pilgrimage site built beside a waterfall. (Only Muslims may cross the stone bridge to visit the marabout shrine itself.)
From here, the path climbs steadily, winding up through high mountain terrain to reach the Toubkal Refuge (3206m), where we spend the night.
Overnight: Dinner and overnight stay at the mountain refuge.
Trek Duration: 5 hours of walking.
Ascent of Jebel Toubkal (4167m) – Return to Imlil – Transfer to Marrakech
After an early morning start, we begin our ascent of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa.
Our route climbs the southern cirque, crossing a stream above the refuge and continuing over rocky scree slopes.
Although the trek is not technical, the altitude and loose terrain make it a challenging climb at times.
Reaching the ridge line, we continue a short distance to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular 360° views — from the Marrakech Plain to the High Atlas, and on clear days even as far as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara Desert.
The Roman scholar Pliny the Elder once described the High Atlas Mountains as “the most fabulous mountains of all Africa.” Standing at the summit, it’s easy to see why.
After soaking in the scenery and taking memorable photos, we descend back to Imlil, where our vehicle will be waiting for the return transfer to Marrakech.
Trek Duration: 9–10 hours total (summit and descent)..
